Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Entrepreneurship training programs have become central to addressing the challenges of unemployment and economic dependency in Nigeria. These programs aim to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills required to start and manage businesses, contributing to the broader goal of economic self-reliance. Dala Local Government Area (LGA) in Kano State has been at the forefront of promoting entrepreneurship training as a means of enhancing self-reliance among its youth and adults (Suleiman & Adamu, 2023).

Entrepreneurship training not only provides participants with technical skills but also fosters attitudes such as innovation, risk-taking, and resilience, which are essential for business success. However, the effectiveness of such programs in fostering long-term economic self-reliance remains an area of concern, particularly in rural areas like Dala. This study will evaluate the impact of entrepreneurship training on the economic self-reliance of individuals in Dala, focusing on factors such as business success rates, income generation, and job creation (Usman & Ibrahim, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the implementation of various entrepreneurship training programs in Dala LGA, there are still questions about their long-term effectiveness in promoting economic self-reliance. Many trained entrepreneurs face challenges such as lack of capital, limited market access, and insufficient business knowledge, which hinder their ability to sustain profitable ventures. This study will examine the extent to which entrepreneurship training leads to lasting economic self-reliance in Dala.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of entrepreneurship training on the economic self-reliance of participants in Dala LGA.

  2. To identify the challenges faced by trained entrepreneurs in sustaining their businesses.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving the effectiveness of entrepreneurship training in Dala.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does entrepreneurship training affect the economic self-reliance of participants in Dala LGA?

  2. What challenges do trained entrepreneurs face in maintaining successful businesses in Dala?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance the effectiveness of entrepreneurship training in promoting economic self-reliance?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Entrepreneurship training significantly improves economic self-reliance among participants in Dala Local Government Area.

  2. Lack of access to finance and market constraints negatively affect the sustainability of businesses established by trained entrepreneurs in Dala.

  3. Improving access to funding and mentorship will enhance the success rates of entrepreneurship training programs in Dala.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be significant to policymakers, development agencies, and community leaders seeking to improve entrepreneurship outcomes in Kano State. By providing insights into the challenges and successes of entrepreneurship training programs, the study will offer recommendations for improving such initiatives to foster long-term economic self-reliance. The study will also contribute to the broader discourse on entrepreneurship as a tool for poverty alleviation in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to Dala Local Government Area in Kano State and focuses on the impact of entrepreneurship training on the economic self-reliance of participants. It does not cover other regions or types of economic empowerment programs. A limitation of the study is that it may face challenges in gathering comprehensive data from entrepreneurs who may not have kept accurate business records.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Entrepreneurship Training: Educational programs designed to teach individuals the skills needed to start and manage businesses, including business planning, financial management, and marketing.

  • Economic Self-Reliance: The ability of individuals to financially support themselves through the creation and management of their own businesses or income-generating activities.

  • Business Sustainability: The ability of a business to maintain operations and profitability over an extended period, despite challenges.
